Assignment 4: Purple
Plan:
For this shoot I plan on taking star trail photos to capture the purple color of the sky at night with the emphasis from the stars.
My Photos:
For this shoot I took star trail photos. To take star trail photos I got a shutter release plug in button. I put my shutter on bulb so it would stay open for as long as the button was held down, which the shutter release plug in did. I had an ISO of 600-800 to capture some color and kept the aperture higher so it would let less light in. I kept the shutter open for about an hour for each photo. I took these photos over the span of two nights. I was really happy with the way the photos came out.
Edits:
I choose to edit the photos that would have the most amount of starts. I worked mostly in photoshop this time to play around with levels and certain colors. I darkened the levels a little bit which brought out more starts that were hidden further back in the photo. I then played around with the highlight and contrast to make the make make the purple color of the night sky stick out and bring out a few more stars. While I did this the mountains turned very dark so I selected only the mountain to lighten it up. Then, I went into noise reduction to get rid of as much of the grain as I could. I was very happy with these edits and with the way they turned out.
Printed Photo:
I choose to print this photo because it stood out to be the most. The purple from the night sky was highlighted very well in this photo and the amount of starts and clarity of the mountains in this photo is really good. I printed this photo on 8.5 * 11 metallic paper because I knew metallic paper would emphasize and make the purple look really good. Another reason I choose to print this photo was because of how many starts you can see in this photo. I also really like the small amount of grain that is in the sky which gives the sky a bit more of a texture in the sky and makes it look like smaller little stars way far away in space. I also really like how there are many different shades of the color purple throughout the image. The different shades of purple not only make it look like it is glowing, but help the viewer notice how many different shades there are. These mixed shades show two ideas about night. One idea that people have about night is that it is a time of fear and darkness. The idea of night that this photo shows is that there is more to be seen in the darkness and it can happy. The purple in the night is not seen by ones eye at night normally, but when you look at night in a different way (all at once) you can see the true beauty it possess. I am very happy with this photo and think that it was very successful in capturing the color purple and meeting my goal.
